In The Woodlands, Texas, a mom of five turned a simple request from customers into a thriving bakery, delighting locals with custom treats and sweet creations.

The scent of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, cookies, and mini cakes drifts through the kitchen as April Dams carefully places the finishing touches on a layered cake jar. What started as a small side project has become a full-fledged bakery business: April’s Sweet Spot Bakery, founded in 2023.

“I was working one of my server jobs, and my regulars kept asking me to make hot chocolate bombs,” April recalled. “It just took off from there.”

Baking a Dream

The early days weren’t without challenges. April quickly learned that making smooth buttercream icing and decorating cakes professionally was harder than it looked. But perseverance, creativity, and a passion for sweets carried her through.

“I had to figure out packaging, presentation, and just keeping everything looking nice,” she said. “Every mistake was a lesson, and now it all feels natural.”

A Sweet Variety

April’s Sweet Spot Bakery now offers a wide array of treats: custom cakes, cookie cakes, mini cakes, cake jars, slices, pudding, cinnamon rolls, cheesecakes, cookie pies, and sweet breads. She also creates sugar-free and gluten-free options, catering to a loyal following that appreciates both the indulgent and dietary-friendly choices.

“My customers love that I offer sugar-free and gluten-free treats,” April said. “They’re so excited to have options that they normally can’t find anywhere else.”

The bakery serves communities across Conroe, The Woodlands, Kingwood, Atascocita, Humble, Galveston, and League City, often appearing at local markets and festivals to showcase her baked goods.

From Server to Entrepreneur

Before starting her bakery, April was a server and bartender, balancing work with raising her five children. Frustrated with her previous job, she took a risk to turn her baking hobby into a business, a move that now defines her daily life.

“Leaving the restaurant world was scary, but I knew I had to do it for my family and my future,” she said.

Looking Forward

April has big plans for the future, including launching a food truck to bring her treats directly to customers across the region. Her long-term goal is to fully transition out of the restaurant industry and grow the bakery into a recognizable brand across Texas.

“I want to make it easier for people to get our treats and to keep creating new things,” April said.

A Local Favorite

For locals, April’s Sweet Spot Bakery is more than just a bakery, it’s a source of community and comfort. Regular customers return for their favorite items, and the combination of classic sweets with dietary-friendly options makes it a destination for all.

“Everyone has a favorite here, and I love seeing their faces when they get it,” April said.

April encourages people to place custom orders, follow her on Facebook, and visit her at markets and festivals around the area. She posts weekly updates about her locations, making it easy for customers to find her newest creations.
